okay welcome everybody to our Macy intermediate mental health parent meeting Series this is meeting number 2 we are going to be covering our topic some of the quest or topics that will be covering or is going to be giving an overview of what is cyberbullying what is bullying in general the different types of bullying and the common places where cyberbullying occur as well as warning signs if your child is being cyberbullied or is bullying cyberbullying others will cover a little bit what to do in case cyberbullying is a crane to your child the California law resources that parents May access to be able to support a child with cyberbullying so Mister at my stories Denise Rue on the welcome thank you for being here tonight and we're going to go ahead and start our presentation awesome thank you Miss Maria so our topic as stated prior is on we're bullying and Miss Teresa and I are the counselors at Macy intermediate we have been seen a lot of issues with cyberbullying and is the reason why we would love to present educates you parents and our students on the dangers of cyberbullying so let me go ahead and start so first off I just want to share with you what is cyberbullying and so cyberbullying is willful and repeated bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones computers and tablets cyberbullying can occur through SMS or text messages and apps or online and saw show Media forums or gaming where people can view participate in or share content so a lot of our kiddos we are noticing that they are they have Facebook they have Tik-Tok they have Snapchat a lot of our kiddos also are Gamers and so I understand that there is a lot of communicating between the gamers and other people who are part of the game and so a lot can take place in these online conversations and so I would like to start off with sharing some stats so I was looking for stats to see you know what is occurring in cyberbullying so I found this stat that says ages 12 to 18 are critical formative years for children cyberbullying can put their Mental Health risk and Lead at 2 a.m. imagine at least of your outcome with kids spending more of their time on smartphones the risk of getting Cyber Bullied is higher than ever so what we are saying here is that the more taxes your kiddos have in social media it's very probable that your kid will get cyberbullied and so there are a lot of Mental Health risk factors here we are seeing a lot of kids coming in who are depressed a lot of kids dealing with anxiety issues because of this matter and so we are concerned just to add a little to your comments and Sean so we noticed that kids that are being cyberbullied they tend to avoid certain situations like coming to school that they are probably so much they would rather stay home then come to school or avoid certain classes and even thinking about coming to to score these classes causes anxiety so that's what we're trying to avoid in presenting this topic to to your parents still alive more education you guys will be more prepared to deal with it because because people who are cyber that is also going to hurt them academically because they not present so yes very true another stat is Middle School age cyber bullying victims are almost twice as likely to attempt suicide than their victims now I want you guys to really pay attention to because this is very real are a lot of our kids are really you know distraught by comments be made especially Middle School aged kids so it's it's very very very that ask parents I'm a parent myself that we are on top of their social media because we need to make sure that we are keeping our kids safe mentally you know because so much happens I just a few things about social media oftentimes social media platforms like Instagram Tik-Tok YouTube they glorify suicide so it's really important to be on top of what our kids are watching and just have open communication with them that if they are being bullied or Cyberbully suicide is not the answer is very true Point like social media and social me they don't care about our kids and that's why we need to be looking out for our kids and then another stat 22.4% of female students aged 12 to 18 say they've been the victim of cyberbullying okay so that. Although it's not 50% but still 22.4% is still big number and these are our female students were seeing that they're more likely to be cyberbullied and this is happening either online text 7.6% of male students in the same age range reported similar instances of cyberbullying so in our school we definitely are seeing that it's we're dealing with this issue more our female student but but we are also seeing it in our male students maybe not the same percentages but it is happening so that's definitely true we've noticed a pattern where female students have then explain his behavior more and are more vengeful especially when it comes to online Behavior I think with the low statistics for male for male students I think a lot of it has to do with males are either in where is the city that they're getting bullied or they don't want to be what's called a snitch and report it to two staff for administration but maybe that's one reason for the low numbers but I'm sure it happens when both populations all right and then 65% of global adult so this is globally say their kids or kids in their communities have been cyber-bullied over social media and then 45% say their child bullet through text or messaging apps right all right here we are seeing a graph that is showing recent bullying overtime and this is marking from the time of 2016 to 2023 which was last year so it's very recent and its nationally representative samples of you of the US and these are 13 to 17 year olds reporting this information so the red margin shows that these are kiddos to our school bullying victim and then are and then the gray scale is showing cyber bullying victim victimization okay so the red is the bullying happening at school so these are our victim and then the grayscale is showing the social media part of our victims and so were seen on the school bully victimization that a 2016 it was at 37.8 and then it's risen up to 20th and 29th it went up to 51.4% and then now in 2023 it's gone down but I'm noticing now that our kids now and middle schools were seeing them have access to social media versus in 26 we didn't really see Middle School aged kids with a cell phone and access to social media so I believe that the numbers are going to Skyrocket soon and sad to say I'm also I'm sorry yes I'm talking about cyberbullying victimization I'm sorry so because they have access to social media now because they have access to cell phones that number is going to rise be that way because of covid-19 we happen to run 2018-2019 so more people stayed home or kids stayed home and if they can spend more time on their electronic which is a higher chance that they can participate in any type of fabric yes Chinese numbers are too by Terry actually scary so Mysteries all right so I am a misery someone in the other school counselor Macy I'm seeing what bullying is and then we'll dive into cyberbullying in the next couple of slides what is bullying bullying is when a person purposely hurt others with with words or actions boys pick on their targets over and over in the hard for them to stop so just a few quick points on it bullies purposely hurt other people with words and actions it happens repeatedly and they seem to have a power over those it's alleged bullying next by wolf will look a little bit more at 2 how it look okay there's different types of bullying first it's physical bullying oftentimes we see this as a board kids are hitting or kicking each other they're pushing or tripping one another I'm usually one trying to overpower another student or intimidate them there's also verbal bullying name calling and teasing is a big thing that happens in Middle School for some reason kids like to make fun of other kids who are different from them they make her feel common about their the way they look or anything to cause them emotional pain or they make threats towards them social bullying is another big thing in middle school because we have a lot of kids that like to follow each other and and group think we can't think for themselves they just kind of go with the crowd so sociable in refers to in his back to spread because a student study in customers and banishment or encourage others to exclude a certain kid or student from the group and then cyberbullying refers to when are some examples of cyberbullying are when students are embarrassing photos or videos of other peers are sending her full comments or messages to one another or impersonating another person is online so we actually had something like that going on Polar Monkey was impersonating or pretending to be someone they weren't just so they can get a reaction from a certain student so that that was horrible and we were doing that right now at school can I call you all right sister a little bit more in detail as to what cyberbullying is cyberbullying takes place over many digital devices like mr. one mentioned earlier cell phones computers and tablets are popular electronics at like the timer bully one another cyberbullying can occur through short message system SMS text messages or app social media forums or games where people can view participate or share content oftentimes you don't think when kids are playing video games that they can Cyberbully each other but nowadays kids can communicate through headphones that they wear while they play with one another or they can also read messages on the Xbox Play Station platform that they're using include standing posting or sharing negative harmful false or me and content about one another. It can also include sharing personal or private from in about someone someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation so just an example of this that we seen here at Macy kids are friends with one another they learn an intimate details about themselves about each other and then from one week to the next day stop talking to each other so this is a pattern that happens quite often the middle school one week there for their friends the next week they're not so after The Gather that information once enough friend they can go and share it with other people and that's how rumors get started so we noticed that that the pattern that happens at Mac and then the last bullet points what does cyberbullying cross the line into unlawful and criminal behavior and we will delve into that a little bit later and and some other slime so what are the most common places where cyberbullying occurs alright I mentioned before social media such as Facebook Instagram Snapchat or Tik-Tok are some platforms where kids like to make fun of each other spread rumors gossip and then the bad thing about that is that I'd like to talk and communicate or spread false information online and then they bring it to school the next day and that's how fight start or that's all no confrontation occur because they are stemming from all my behavior text messaging and messaging apps on mobile or tablet devices are other ways that kids since every boy each other and just a little bit about text messaging we often tell kids if there are you receiving harmful text message to take a screenshot of them they can stay that as a proof and Wilshire Wilshire some more information about that in the next supposed to buy instant messaging direct messaging and online chatting over the Internet online forums chat room Message Board such as read it through email people can send her phone formation through email and as previously mentioned online gaming communities okay so we have a video to show I'm going to go ahead and play it not really playing this one okay so let me see if I could get out of here and go and copy the link sorry is that okay I see it did it stop yeah it stopped I'm not sure what's happening why do we get to move forward and then we can put the video at the end of a slide so they can or we can also that video link on our school website that way that way I can access it that way too perfect and it's called is its cyber bullying and it's by stopbullying.gov it's a great video. what visually without cyberbullying looks and what is not considered a blowing so it's it's quick 3 minute video you can also YouTube all right do you want to see these bugs this one I'm sorry you want to talk about these guys are sure yeah I don't know what to ask okay so they're there bring signs to look out for both your if your child is being cyberbullied or is or if your child is cyber bullying others okay so one noticeable increases decreases in device use okay so if you see that your Kindle is constantly on social media and all of a sudden stops that's something to look out for there's probably a reason or they're trying to avoid looking at something because it's not good or if there's increases because they're more intrigued and wanting to know what you know what's happening or they're part of something and this is including texting so I'll so a child exhibit emotional responses like laughter anger upset to what is happening on their device you know you see your kid all of a sudden like cracking up so hard or you know or there angry because they're probably being being made fun of or if you see them upset those are important science to look out for and if your kiddos probably laughing at the information being provided and they're probably part of something not good a child hides their screen or devised when others are near so they're if they're hiding something we know that our kids if they're really up to no good they're usually hiding so we need to find out why they're hiding and avoids discussions about what they are doing on their device okay so they don't want to talk to you about what they saw or what they thought it was funny or what angered them it's not good news social media accounts are shut down or new p r okay a child starts to avoid social situations even those that were enjoyed in the past and then last a child becomes withdrawn or depressed or losses in Christin people and activities what to do when your child or someone you know is being cyber cyber bully so there's a website. Stop bullying. stop stop bullying. Gov sorry and has a lot of great resources of recommendations and this is where we pull this information from so the first thing you want to do when dealing with bullying is that you want to notice you want to look for any changes motor behavior and explore what's causing it today so this is a great time to talk to your student your child and learn a little bit about what's happening and just to see what they're doing on the digital device do you want to talk to them you want to ask directions to learn about what's happening how would started and who's involved you want a document you want to keep a record of what is happening and where so I can mention earlier we often tell these these parties to screenshot so they can have proof of the harmful post or content most laws and policies note that bullying is a repeated Behavior so keeping a record of this house documented as your proof or Austin or else it's just going to be you know one person's word against another yes take a copy make a copy of it because that is your so they are constantly screenshotting their phones with messages so be aware parent that this is a great way to have proof so if this is a great way for us at the admin team to find out what's happening so that the kids oftentimes email me or text me the information and then I'm able to upload it to my computer or email to the rest of the Stafford like anyone else on our team but we have communication and we often used as proof to find out what really happened okay so the next thing you can do is report if a classmate of cyberbullying reported to the school you can also contact the app or the social media platform to report any offensive content or to have it removed If the child has received his legal threats or is or if a potential crime or illegal Behavior the crew reported to the police when is a crime and they've asked you a couple of slides and go in detail about the the laws against cyberbullying okay and last it's important to support food posting positive comment on the person who is targeted with the with bowling or to try to shift the conversation in a more positive direction I'm if possible try to determine if more professional support is needed home for those that are involved just include talking to a guidance counselor like my Miss Rwanda myself or being referred to a mental health professional like a therapist all right so Mysteries mention we would be talking a little bit about the laws now we feel that this is very important for parents to know because a lot of times I think we become shock when we find out that it's our kiddos whooping cyberbullying and honestly we've noticed with kids who have Cyberbully they have no clue that it's actually bullying online and so they are a lot of them don't feel the fear of what would happen if they've they've gone too far with the Vic some of the victims tell their parents and their parents sold and they file a report through the police department so I felt that it was very important for you to educate yourself on this and so it says cyber this I got this information through social media victims. Loss center there they keep people up-to-date with the laws that regard to cyberbullying and so it stays here the cyber bullying, spring minor are slightly different than for an adult is convicted juveniles aged 17 and under will go to juvenile court under certain circumstances a minor age 16 and older could be transferred to in adult Court depending on the severity of the situation of juvenile courts practice more discretion and focus more on Rehabilitation rather than punishment and so the the you will necessarily see cyberbullying they they go under the harassment code that that's why cyberbullying falls under so it falls under code 65 at a 650 3.2 and it states that any person who was found guilty of the following can be charged with a misdemeanor and then punishment includes up to one year in county jail and a fine of up to $1,000 or it can be both we have had instances where cyberbullying happen or or or bullying actually had happened and we've had parents let us know that they're falling you know reports and the police get involved and then there's I don't know if you want to talk what about that mr. retarded but it's pretty scary that is if it's actually August the great plaid I have it it's crazy that parents do realize that you get that one parent where they just will not tolerate any kind of bullying I mean can you take that one and end to charged with a misdemeanor I mean and it is something that I don't think parents realize that all these statistics are you don't think about that you don't think about your child somebody doing this to your child or the outcome of what they are doing but I think you really need to listen to what they're saying that there's a penal code this is really something that I need to take under consideration the first line of defense know your kids are doing alright alright so quit the quiz and so our first question is kids who are cyberbullied are more likely to a skip school B get bad grades C have health problems or D all the above and the answer is All the Above mr. Reeves mansion in the beginning you know the kids were cyberbullied there's negative consequences to them being cyberbullied and so we'll see them skipping school cuz they don't want to confront or see the people that are hurt that affects their grades because they're not showing up to school and then potentially it could lead for them to become depressed and you know probably hurt themselves themselves and so it because it becomes real a real issue yeah so is everybody has severe social and emotional and Mental effects on kids and it's really important to take out an attic yes and then Mysteries you want to read the question number to cyberbullying is not as bad as bullying in real life because you usually forget about it easily the answer ball is not easily forgotten because I got mention before he expects kids on multiple levels and then question 3 uploads your photo without your knowledge on social media write a funny post about it can it be considered bullying and the answer is yes okay so you cannot you cannot use somebody's picture or whatever to to embarrass them because that is cyberbullying without their permission all right question number four is it illegal to Cyberbully yes or no and that's why I mentioned the previous slide it is the penal code for it you can receive a misdemeanor or a thousand-dollar fine remember it is illegal to use electronic means because it's considered harassment at or a threat you know what to the person so this is why it is illegal a right question number 5 cyber bullying is a serious tan it can cause someone to attempt suicide true or false true the can lead to suicide so this very very serious topic and it's a reason why we are talking about this so we came up with a few resources to help your parents started to learn a little bit more about bullying subway.com is a really great one that can help you you know get some resources educate a little educate yourself a little bit more about what are the signs to look for also find treatment. Gov is it is another great resource where you can locate Mental Health Services the 988 lifeline.org or you can also text 988 is the suicide line if you feel like you're in distress you can always call or text let me know what get right back to you dmh the LA County.
