once again thank you everybody to Macy intermediate math family night we have some incredible information to share with you and I won't I'm going to hand it off to her I'm a steam with Julie Cortez so and mr. menjivar how you doing and is mr. Franco I have missed them in there with me and Miss Cortez like this video I will be reading off Google sites that we have so if you do have any questions feel free to put it in the chat and Mr menjivar will kind of monitor that right there and then see if you can answer that as we go that okay with everybody wanted her to Mister Money if you share your screen I don't think that you'll be able to see the chat so if you share your screen you can do that now and then I can go ahead and monitor the top thank you everybody where to get starters queso walking to last family night at Macy intermediate some of the Common Core and smarter balanced stuff Texas facts okay so what is Common Core Common Core concentrate on a clear set of math skills and Concepts in a more organized way during the school year the standards encourage students to solve real-world problems so depth and breadth of our focus is building a strong foundation in the fall solid conceptual understanding procedural skills and fluency application of math to solve scenarios and then problem solving and now it's just a joke okay stuff that we have would be like our understanding is patterned procedures procedural fluency skills performing procedures Act Zachary Lane appropriate application in a perfect scenario that would be fun to three days but you know there's some days work day 16 a little bit longer so you know we have to go into that second day in and day too got pushed back so sometimes I think we look at it more as like the week there day one and day two maybe two days and then pay 3 somewhere that lets going for like about a week for us you know doing various types of different styles of of Mastiffs I'm thinking across grades so when we do our data team meetings you know we work with the sixth grade. create an F-18 features 6th grade goes over ratios proportional reasoning early Expressions equations and percent that any moves onto 7th grade where do braces again proportional reasoning rational numbers and still some of the stuff that needed to be retard from 6. That is over the years the 6th grade 7th grade and I'll have one these are consumable books which means on the pages filled out and that book gets thrown away and then we get a new book each year no so far you've been doing a great job thank you or just her Matthew we have paper is a tutoring after we have and then we have Primetime you and we are open to any other ones that you want to use as long as you know that you can sit there and the kids that they're using it correctly and Tamar it's a touring company don't give me the answers they work with you giving you hints and step-by-step stuff and then, cadogan unacademy is updated a whole lot of this stuff yes oh yes oh, Academy is good resource that has The Strokes no videos and also articles for students to read and also has practice problems too similar to Matthew goes more with the Carnegie book more like to the types of car in the classroom definition research to you you you, I'm so sorry we have a question on the chat from Mr domingues for the consumable book are the kids riding on the they they use the packets they write on the book as we get every teacher does a little bit differently I I make packets cuz the books pretty ginormous and now it's got a good five hundred pages and it and it's a really thick but for that backpack so I keep the book in my classroom and pool package shop and the kids working packets as we go along and then they do you know keep him in their folder cabinet in my classroom and then at the end of the year whatever you do just a little bit differently but they are using those to write it yes just so you know a lot of time we know that there is a law different apps that the kids are using to just take a picture of the math problem and solves it for them and although that might be a good great tool for them we just want to make sure that they are at least trying to do the problem as well and just getting the answers and not learning how to do the actual problem I'm a little old school when somebody take a test the kids have to do paper pencil still you know so they don't have their phones they don't have their Chromebooks. So they can't use that app once they're taking that test test for State Testing they have a lock on certain things it's not going to let them get to it when we do a secure browser and at that time at blocks any other kind of communication or access to anything else the only thing they can be an active is just the test on that secure browser it closes off everything else and they don't have access to anything else are we going with them the other sitting resources I think so I don't see any other questions on the chat so I think we're good to continue okay so how does or your child at home did you know that the four major operations of of Marathon addition subtraction multiplication and division since the beginning of time different way and there's nothing wrong with that I'm an old teacher whatever works the way you learned that you're his mom do it a different way but you're going to come up with the same answer either still going to be 5 whether you multiply and divide them whatever you got you know it's just a different style of that they use whole numbers to use definitely you know it's you do the work the way you were taught and then your son or daughter does it have different when you got the same answer that's basically all over looking for it and we like to see the work so that we can understand how to help your son or daughter better but with that result in respect please parents understand common core test testing does sometimes ask them do it more than one way and so we do sometimes have to emphasize they have to learn it more than one way and just to add to that due to the mathematical practices or likes to put some stuff in there is a listing out that two integers together but things like a two and a negative to have to equal 0 but they have to model it somehow so why what we do here with the Carnegie book we use chips like positive and negative chips and where they make the repairs so stop in different ways to roach and get an answer yeah they are saying that be like you know something would be where you have five circles and then you had you know they're open circles and you have full circles and then you start taking away Circa 0.0 pairs or you know opposite to get rid of bears like that so it's Cortez talking about it every teacher call that terminology. Franco said we use different terms we do also connect them for the kids yeah just to add to that as well is the reasoning also purchase dinners for the performance task May for the state test because it's two components the test ones where's there's a computer and then the other components to performance test though it does depend on for the second part of the any questions right now let's see I like to play games too right and one things people don't know is that games are tonight as books are to reading and games provide many benefits very fun way for 1 to spend time with the family I'll be right there interactive and collaborative so it gets people to talk to each other they take the pressure off Matt and put it into a meaningful context and also involves problem solving and critical thinking and arithmetic okay and if you guys talked to Rusty and in 8th grade if you guys remember the beginning slides they start to graph linear equations with the y-intercept so you been counting spaces like Wendy play Monopoly or anything like that so which games are the best so that's another big butts not yet and almost any game you can think of that requires planning logic mental health of bills that are are vital to Excellence in mathematics even a word game like Scrabble involved Mass when placing words to optimize your score okay so that's important also the building family traditions or the glue to that both families together parents and start a family game night play choosing one night a week to play games turn off the TV the phone and all other distractions just have fun and also if you know those critical thinking skills you never do play game spoke the games are this could be the next life are good for all for all ages kindergarten to 12th but I want to hear I personally like but there's other ones like the ones mentioned in the chat my my sister makes me play Clue that you guys sort of Clue turn on message no yes okay awesome okay my husband just played that with the girls over the weekend and that games but you know I have fun I spend time with my family and my sister and my and my and my kids kids just to talk about what what their next moves are is if it's a really good really good wife to build these a game is really fun I personally like the last two can can those were some of you have kids that has me as the teacher make him who can attend a good way to practice write multiplication division addition and subtraction sudokus another one for strategy try and Klein is another one for mental health and so on right so many many games that could be used to fill these critical thinking skills are the games listed are they computer base are they board games the board game famous order to place Rack-O I heard of that one Franco said he used to play Risk a lot and you know I got to be to my mom when I went when we were younger she would have us in the car when we were kids and when we were at a stop sign my mama just sit there and you know I'm shy to give me your address and what station and we'll be sitting there City not RH I'm sitting on her Savage you know I'm dating myself mom had to make up games when we are in the car now see what is 3 * 23 * 16 hour days where everything is not given to a spinster oh yeah yeah your parents radio so what's our next move questions you can put or you can unmute yourself and make me and you can ask your question now we actually have are coming to the end of our presentation with you I'm I hope that you enjoyed all the information that was shared with you tonight we are going to make sure that if the teachers have any resources that we email those to you so it's really important that you filled out that sign in form that I posted on the chat earlier today we do have a question what are the qualifications for Accelerated math in 6th grade done the arm what are what are what they are right now they sold like a sixth grade teacher will will monitor weather at during the school year and depending on they do on i-Ready the i-Ready math score test then they'll sit there and put them in and then they do get though they'll be a process where they check it out it's usually done through 6th grade and 6th grade teachers would make the recommendations on that timer I teach this at the accelerated class but the kids are ready to get to me look at their overall performance class we look at the second third and fourth grade quarter grades or I should say it's mainly those and we also look at i-Ready and aspects course so we take the whole student into consideration not just one factor NN are part of the reason we go up based off of their recommendations once the class starts like when I get the kids in that they August the customers really fast I have to cover all the 7th grade and have to reach great so it's not like we're your kid can maybe jump in like in october-november I'm already half of the 7th grade material so your your son and daughter's everyday like half a year behind the register if it's so what's once they make those recommendations you know that we'd they really take a good hard look at her in those here and they give me those kids then I rock and roll with those kids I try not to get rid of them and then I make my my you know my choices for them to move up next year if you know and and then we see where we go.
